Description

After the end of World War II, the world quickly entered the Cold War era between the United States and the Soviet Union; In 1949, when New China was founded, Wu Guanzhong, who was in Paris, resolutely gave up the opportunity to develop in the world's art capital and vowed to serve the country with his overseas learning. For nearly thirty years thereafter, Wu Guanzhong firmly believed that modernism was the correct path for Chinese art, and took a crucial step towards "nationalization of oil painting" and "modernization of traditional Chinese painting"; In 1978, Chinese Mainland ushered in a new era of reform and opening up. In order to show the new atmosphere of the land of China, the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts in Beijing undertook the national task of airport murals. More than 40 professors jointly created nearly 500 square meters of grand works, becoming the most important mural movement in China's Modern era; At that time, Wu Guanzhong, who was teaching at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, also created a six meter long giant mural "Northern Scenery" in 1979, which was shown on the wall of the western restaurant of the airport, famous for this vast national historical art project; Six years before the birth of this giant mural, Wu Guanzhong had created the original version of the Northern Landscape (Lot No. 1013) oil painting in 1973, which inspired heroic feelings and romanticism. In this autumn shoot, Sotheby's is honored to present this 1973 version of "Northern Scenery" in the late modern art shoot, which is a historic masterpiece and a symbol of the tenth anniversary of Mr. Wu Guanzhong's death.
