Description

It is reported that Yoshitomo Nara's Hidden Knife Behind His Back was created in 2000, with a size of 234 x 208cm. The painting lacks the title of "knife", creating a tense atmosphere of declaration without war, while the hidden knife emphasizes the intention of waiting for an opportunity to attack. The artist used a strategy of concealment - non-existent knives appear more omnipresent - the children's contradictory rebellion, potential power of readiness, and imaginative imagination are self-evident.

This work is the watershed of Yoshitomo Nara's creation. He ended his 12 year stay in Germany and returned to Japan. Returning to his hometown, he used a large-sized canvas and began creating a full body portrait of a little girl with a pearlescent background, becoming a landmark work. The second change is that Yoshitomo Nara's girls show "visible humanization characteristics", that is, the figure proportion is closer to the real children, and the expression becomes mild. The third transformation was the disappearance of prominent knives, chainsaws, pistols, and sticks in the 1990s. Since 2000, Yoshitomo Nara has kept the sword light and sword shadow on his paper works. The canvas works are simple and calm, forming a new and quiet atmosphere effect as a whole, combining contradiction, drama, tension and suspense.
