Description

This series of works, commonly known as "Haystack," mainly depicts a huge conical structure composed of wheat or grain. They are stacked like mountains, with the purpose of allowing the grains and stems to air dry before the thresher separates them, avoiding the growth of mold.

Each village does not have its own threshing machine, and it often takes several months to wait for the machine to be transported to a specific location. Therefore, the grains harvested in summer are stacked into neat and sturdy haystacks, which may not be harvested until January or February of the following year.

These haystacks are over 10 feet tall, sometimes exceeding 20 feet, and their shapes vary depending on the location.

Monet's golden grass pile presents the shape of a common grain pile in Normandy countryside, with a cylindrical bottom and a pointed top, covering the fields of Bugivini.
