Hu Gongshou (1823-1886) was born in Huating (now Songjiang, Shanghai). Originally named Yuanyuan, also known as Shouhe and Xiaoqiao, and also known as Hengyun Shanmin, his calligraphy is unique and moves between the plains and the North Sea. The Shaoling of the Poet Sect is pure and healthy, following practice. Along with Pu Hua, Xu Gu, Ren Bonian, and others, they are known as outstanding representatives of the Maritime Painting School. Hu Gongshou has always resided in Shanghai and is skilled in painting landscapes, orchids, bamboo, and flowers, drawing on the wonders of various schools from ancient and modern times, becoming a great figure. Famous scholars from Jiangsu and Zhejiang are all admired. Calligraphy comes and goes between the plains and the North Sea, with a unique style.
