Kun [k] ū n] Can (1612-1692) was a painter from the late Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. His original surname was Liu and he became a monk. His name was Kun Can, with the courtesy name Jieqiu, and he was also known as Shixi, Baitu, Shidao Ren, or Shixi Dao Ren. He was also known as the Duan Dao Ren or Dianzhu Dao Ren. Born in Wuling, Huguang (now Changde, Hunan). Together with Shi Tao, they are known as the "Two Stones", and together with the Eight Great Mountain People, Hongren, and Shi Tao, they are known as the "Four Painting Monks of the Early Qing Dynasty". He enjoys visiting famous mountains and rivers, and later resided at the Youqi Temple on Niushou Mountain in Nanjing, where he had close contact with Cheng Zhengkui. Proficient in painting landscapes, following the example of Wang Meng. Likes to use dry brushes to scrub and render with light ink, with light ochre as the background. The layout is complex, lush, and the artistic conception is profound. Good at calligraphy, capable of poetry. There are surviving works such as "Layered Rocks and Gullies", "Sleeping Tour", "Green Sky", and "Fishing on the Qing Kun River".
